Reading Augustine’s Confessions in Epiphany

February 3 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Spend the long winter evenings delving into St. Augustine’s Confessions! Our reading series will include two lectures by Father Walter Hannam, Rector of St Bartholomew’s Anglican Church, who also teaches at St. Augustine’s Seminary in Toronto.
Abstract:
When Saint Augustine wrote his Confessions, he was responding to the growing spread of asceticism in the Roman world.  The task he set himself was twofold: to explain to himself the significance of his conversion to Christianity, and to do so in terms that would also convince his readers that this was indeed the one, true faith.  In his attempt to achieve these aims, Augustine produced a masterpiece of intellectual biography, written with an emotional intensity that makes it one of the great works of Christian spiritual writing.

The evening will start with a supper at 6 pm, followed by discussion and compline.
