Betty Scantlebury

Betty was a parishioner at St Peter’s Church Carlton Street for twenty years before her congregation moved north to amalgamate with St Simon the Apostle in 2016.

Betty came to Canada from Barbados as a teenager, lived with her family for a time in Owen Sound, went to college in Hamilton, and worked in the insurance industry. She found St Peters when a friend took her there. “I wasn’t going to church for a long time and thought it was time I found one.”

She admits she was sad when the church at Carlton and Sherbourne closed “because I loved St Peters.” But the transition went smoothly because everybody came over together and we were welcomed. I also made some new friends.”

A perpetually cheerful presence, Betty can be found assisting as a sidesperson, dressed up in the surplice of a server, or in the kitchen putting out after-church coffee. “I’m always in the kitchen,” she laughs. “The group I hang with are there.”
