The Opportunities Committee connects the church with the wider community. It focuses on the neighbourhoods of the parish (St James Town, Cabbagetown, the Village, and Rosedale) as well as our neighbours across the GTA and beyond. With a particular focus on social justice and community outreach, the Opportunities Committee allows any member of the parish to bring ideas for short to long-term projects and events so that the Committee may welcome, discern, and action new initiatives. Meetings occur monthly, and all are welcome to come with or to hear and help us discern new ideas.
Our social justice focus for 2018/2019 is on poverty and particularly food security and affordable housing, with a long term commitment to reconciliation work and building connections with the indigenous peoples living in Toronto.
2019 Anti-Poverty Resources
Each year the Social Justice and Advocacy Office of the Anglican Diocese of Toronto releases a vestry motion for all parishes to bring forward and vote on at their annual meeting of the vestry. You can read the 2019 vestry motion and backgrounder here. (PDF link) In order to be able to vote yes on the vestry motion in good faith, the Opportunities Committee has prepared a resource binder on issues of poverty in Ontario and the GTA to help parishioners engage with issues thoughtfully. You can find a digital version of this binder here. Please also join us in this prayer for discernment as we seek to implement long-term ministries addressing the problem of poverty in our communities:
Almighty God, giver of every good gift:
Look graciously on your Church, and so guide our minds as we discern our path to help our neighbours living in poverty, that we may show your light and that your will might be done on earth as it is in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
You can also use our verse and statistic cards to pick a statistic about poverty and a Bible verse that resonate with you to guide your prayers.
